I TOLD YOU he needs to be taken out, but do you listen? Nooooooooo

ALERT: Obama’s Post-Presidential Website Online… Campaign Image Spotted

Barack Obama is America’s political houseguest who won’t go away. During his tenure, Democrats lost both houses of Congress, scores of governorships and state legislatures, and finally the White House. Despite that record, the former president has decided that, much like the Foo Fighters, he’ll stick around.

If you doubt this, close examination of his new website proves just how politically involved the former president wants to stay. Yes, the former first family already has a website, titled The Office of Barack and Michelle Obama. (I hear they got a good deal on used servers from Hillary Clinton.)

At first glance, the website looks innocuous enough. You’re greeted with a clip from Obama’s farewell speech, where he recites his “achievements” while saying, “Yes, we can. Yes, we did.”

Conspicuously missing from the laundry list was reducing the Democrats to temporal irrelevance, but whatever.

See? Harmless enough, right?

Take a little bit of a closer look at the bottom, however, and you might notice something a little disconcerting.

A closer look:

That’s a link to Organizing for Action, Barack Obama’s political organization. If you haven’t heard of them, let me give you a quick introduction.

OFA, which started as Obama for America, doesn’t need to release its donor list as a 501(c)4 organization, but New York Post columnist Paul Sperry reports that the group has taken in more than $40 million and has an army of over 30,000 activists.

They were the force behind organizing some of the recent protests at American airports over President Donald Trump’s executive action on immigration, protests that former President Obama said he was “heartened” by in spite of the acrimonious and occasionally violent nature of these actions.

OFA and its partner radical group “Indivisible” had a handy guide that they distributed to town hall disrupters leaked online. The guide included friendly, non-partisan advice like “(s)it by yourself or in groups of two, and spread out throughout the room. This will help reinforce the impression of broad consensus,” “(l)ook friendly or neutral so that staffers will call on you,” and “(d)on’t give up the mic until you’re satisfied with the answer.”

And this is the group that the former president has put a link to on his website — a link that comes before, mind you, the Obama Foundation, which is his official charity organization.

While presidential charities do have a somewhat dodgy history of actually being, you know, charitable (looking at you, Billary), ineffectual charity is still a more dignified thing for a former president to push than an astroturfing outfit that organizes individuals to angrily rampage through airports and shut down civilized debate at town halls so that they can “reinforce the impression of broad consensus” for hungry CNN cameras.

Yet, OFA’s website makes the whole thing sound downright friendly: “OFA is committed to mobilizing and training the next generation of progressive organizers and leaders because real, lasting change doesn’t just happen on its own — it requires a program, it requires organizing, and it requires people like you.”

Yes, you too can further debase political discourse in this country by inchoately screeching at a member of Congress. Yes we can. Yes we did.

Barack Obama had already broken with recent tradition by staying on in Washington and intimating that he would remain active in liberal political circles.

“Now is the time for some organizing,” Obama was quoted as saying on a conference call with OFA members. “So don’t mope.”

That sounded bad enough. However, Obama’s explicit support for a political organization that continually manufactures outrage makes it clear that he plans not only to weigh in on his successor’s policies, but also to deliberately disrupt whatever the Republican Party does.

That’s not the worst thing about former President Obama’s unapologetic boosterism for OFA, though. It’s that he gets to appear above the fray, speaking the same sort of platitudinal hopey-changey folderol that got him elected. At the same time, he’s enabling a group of political hooligans devoted to witless, zombie-like intimidation of anything or anyone they disagree with.

And yet, this is the legacy of the Obama administration. A lot of flowery words and idealist phrases, all backed up by strident, divisive activism that sought to silence and marginalize any opposition to the ideological underpinnings of the president’s agenda. Maybe it’s fitting that OFA figures so prominently on the former president’s website. Fitting, but still wrong.
