In Indiana, a loud-mouthed Muslim woman in a full black burka waltzed into a Family Dollar store and started throwing her weight around. After the Muslim demanded what she thought she was entitled to receive, the white employee came back with a priceless response.
Sarah Zawjahtul AbdAllah Salaam stopped by the store location in Gary to grab some items on her shopping list and evidently stir up controversy the second she saw the chance. She barely made it through the front door when she got that opportunity and took it, including setting up her phone to record it, which captured something else.
The store manager was ringing up customers near the front doors when she saw Sarah come in. Wearing her full religious garb, including a headscarf that covered her face, the manager asked her to remove it for safety reasons. Sarah didn’t like this instruction, which she felt was anti-Islamic, and immediately began to argue with the employee who shut the Muslim woman up in just four words.
In the footage of the incident, which she posted on social media, Sarah is heard saying that she shouldn’t have to remove her headscarf because it’s against her religion and is her right to wear it. Staying firm on her own demand, the manager explained that the store is in a high crime area and the request to see her face was simply to prevent theft, which is a big problem there. Sarah took this to mean that the manager was assuming she was going to steal because she’s Muslim.
When the cloaked customer wouldn’t follow the request, the manager asked her to leave, which only further infuriated the Muslim woman, who continued to shout about fairness and make threats that she would report the employee to corporate management. In response, the manager just kept repeating, “Have a blessed day.” Although she ended up leaving the store, she took to Facebook with her recording to fan the flames of so-called injustice.
While this is a free country and she’s certainly entitled to wear whatever she wants, Family Dollar should have the right to refuse service to her if they feel it’s in the best interest of the company and their customers’ safety. This would also go for people who cover their faces in ski masks, hoodies, or any other clothing that completely conceals their identity.
Sarah felt that she was being discriminated against, using the example that she’s seen girls in bikinis in the store, which was permissible but a burka is not. In saying that, she missed the entire point of the manager’s explanation, perhaps on purpose, since nothing can be hidden in a bathing suit, but a lot can be concealed by a burka. This had nothing to do with being anti-Islam. It was about preventing persistent issues in the store. Sarah doesn’t have to shop there if she doesn’t like the rules.
