It appears there has been at least one explosion near the finish line of the Boston Marathon today, Monday April, 15th, police and witnesses are now saying.
The explosion (unconfirmed origin as of yet) occurred as runners were finishing up the 117th running of the popular marathon, as crowds watched and cheered from the sidelines.
“There was an explosion, police, fire and EMS are on the scene. We have no indication of how many people are injured,” a spokesperson for the Boston Police Department is quoted as saying.
According to spokespeople for the Boston Marathon, nobody will be allowed in or out of the hotel that was set up as a staging area for the victims.
Runner Mike Mitchell of Vancouver, Canada who had just finished the race stated he was looking back over his shoulder at the finish line when he witnessed the “massive explosion”. As smoke rose over 50 feet in the air, Mitchell said he witnessed people running and screaming from the site of the explosion. “Everybody just freaked out,”
Twitter comments are running rampant as some are quoted as saying; :”It’s Patriot’s Day in Boston, when Lexington and Concord are commemorated, in case you needed another reason to suspect this is terrorism.”
Jackie Bruno @JackieBrunoNECN stated on their twitter feed; “I saw people’s legs blown off. Horrific. Two explosions. Runners were coming in and saw unspeakable horror.”
Police on scene are reporting that another device was found in front of the Mandarin Hotel, and that evacuations of the surrounding area are in progress.
